Food and Farmers

What produce is in or out of season?

We try to update our produce list as often as we can. What you see on the web site is what we plan to have available. Occasionally, we discover at the last minute that the vendor/farmer does not have the item or the quality is questionable. Then we try to substitute with another produce item of equivalent value. If there are any items you wish to never receive or would always prefer to receive, please mention them in the comments box of your order when you check-out.

What farms do you work with?

In any given week we may get produce from 10-15 different farmers all over Central Texas. You can visit our Meet the Farmers page to learn more about the specific farms and their operations. We also get organic produce not grown in Texas from places like California and Colorado. This gives you the greatest selection while still delivering the freshest produce possible.

Will the produce be OK outside?

Depending on the season, most produce will do just fine sitting outside for short periods of time. During the summer, it may not be advisable to order extremely perishable items if nobody will be home to receive the produce. If any items do spoil from sitting outside, we will be happy to replace them.

Is all of your produce certified organic?

Everything that is not locally produced is certified Organic. Some local farms are not certified, but grow organically and run sustainable farms. Many of them are too small to warrant the time and money it takes to get the USDA certification, but we believe their product to be the best in the land. We also work with farms that are in transition to certified organic land (growing organically and in the process of being certified by the USDA). We believe helping these farmers is an important part of increasing the accessibility and availability of organic food for everyone. We try to show conventional farmers the benefits of transitioning to organics and we offer consulting services to help get them started.

What else do you carry?

We try to carry the largest selection of Organic food possible. We investigate every company we work with, though, to ensure they are committed to the same things we are. If a company has questionable production methods or is deemed not socially responsible we simply won't buy from them. You can be certain that everything you buy from Greenling is not only the highest quality, but is produced by people who care about what they are putting on your table.

Why don't you carry raw milk?

The short answer is - It's illegal. I guess there's not really a long answer. In Texas, you can only buy raw milk directly from the farm, on the farm. There are some people who have found some loopholes, but that's all we'll say about that. Well, I guess we'll also say we think it's absolutely ridiculous the government feels they have the right to keep you from enjoying this healthy, tasty beverage.
