Local Turkeys are Flying!

We’re in the home stretch for Thanksgiving, with just a few local, pastured birds available. The cut-off for delivery of these turkeys has passed. However, a limited number of these locally-raised birds are still available for pick-up! And to help them fly the coop before Thanksgiving, we have marked them 10% off.

To order your bird for pick-up:

  1. Log-in or create your account at Greenling.com.
  2. Place the turkey of your choice in your basket and check-out. You can see the local turkeys that are still available here. You’ll know you’ve finished placing your order once you see the confirmation screen that says “Great! You’re done.”
  3. Call us at 512-440-8449 so that we can schedule a time for you to pick up your turkey.

Pick-ups are between 9 AM and 5 PM on Tuesday, November 20th or Wednesday, November 21st. If you don’t call us to arrange a time for pick-up, the turkey will be delivered on your regular delivery day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanks for making local and organic food the centerpiece of your holiday table. And as always, lettuce know if you have any questions by calling 512-440-8449. We’ll have customer service staff available to help until 9 PM each night leading up to Turkey Day.

Yo Gobble Gobble! Reserve Your Local Turkey Today!

We are excited to announce that your local Thanksgiving turkeys are available for pre-order today! We expect to sell out of these local birds early, so reserve your family’s now.

Dale and Linda Hudspeth are raising our local, pastured birds this year and they are oh-so delicious. We’ve had several taste tests pitting them against conventional birds and it was almost insulting to the local bird to even suggest there could be a comparison. If you haven’t had one, you just won’t understand how good it can be until you try. Hudspeth Farms turkeys are raised in open pastures in Forestburg, Texas, and their diet consists of green grass, bugs, non-GMO Milo, and some soy protein. They are not fed corn. This is a locally raised, free-range bird for your Thanksgiving feast! We are offering two local options for your family’s Thanksgiving dinner: a large turkey (15-18 lb.) or a medium turkey (12-15 lb.).

If you pre-order your turkey by Oct. 31, we’ll even sweeten the deal – you’ll get your choice of a FREE Traditional Gravy Roasting Kit or a Kale Waldorf Salad kit! Just tell us which recipe kit you prefer in the packing notes for your order.

To order, create a basket and choose either a medium (12-15 lb),large (15-18 lb) bird, then schedule it for delivery for the week of November 12 or the week of November 19. (As a limited item those are the only dates you’ll be able to select.) We’ll ask for a deposit to hold the reservation, and you’re done! You can shop our selection of side dishes, desserts and other Thanksgiving holiday items now, or add those to your basket later– they’ll be available to browse until Turkey day.

See the product listings linked above for more details. If you have any questions, ‘lettuce know!’

Celebrating Winter Squash

Though it might be called “winter” squash, here in Texas we have the fortune of enjoying these hearty beauties throughout the summer and fall too. There’s plenty of reasons to fall in love with winter squash – versatility, nutrient density, and just plain deliciousness, but one of our favorite things about them is their staying power. It’s a rare treat to find a fresh, local veggie with such a hearty shelf life – just store them in a cool, dry place (refrigeration is not recommended) and they’ll stay tasty for 1-3 months.

The winter squash family is diverse is size, shape, and color – the most well known members are the acorn and the butternut squash (both of which are making frequent appearances in your Local Box!), but others include the spaghetti, kabocha and delicata squash. This family is tight-knit – you can swap them out in pretty much any recipe that calls for winter squash and they’ll work just fine.

The nutrient density in a winter squash is remarkable – not only a fantastic source of Vitamin A (214% of your recommended daily intake in just 1 cup), but they’re also a great source of Vitamin C and fiber. They’ve recently been shown to be a great source of antioxidants, too – a recent study identified them as the primary food source in some participants for beneficial carotenoids like alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, while it lands in the top 3 for a slew of other health-supporting nutrients. Read more here for details on what all this means.

So how do you cook these beauties? We prefer to start by roasting them, since they tend to be extra hard and difficult to chop up. Cut it in half and toss it in the oven at 400 degrees for 45-60 minutes depending on size (here’s a very simple preparation), and then you can use the roasted squash in a myriad of ways. Some of our favorite blogs have done recipe round-ups on winter squash that are definitely worth your perusal:

New Driver Uniforms!

Our Greenling driver uniforms have gotten a makeover! The drivers are as handsome as ever, but now instead of t-shirts, they are wearing light blue, half-sleeve button-up shirts with a Greenling logo embroidered over the right pocket.

These shirts are much cooler for our beloved delivery dudes, and we think they look pretty sharp, too. Keep an eye out for the drivers’ new look when one of them delivers your order next week.
